Welcome to Te Akau

Te Akau (Elliot Bay) is an iconic surf beach in Northland fringed by indigenous forest to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

Te Akau lies on the East Coast of the North Island, in Ipipiri (Eastern Bay of Islands).

A brief history

The property had been in the Elliot family for ninety years. They leased the farm in Te Akau in 1930 and later purchased it. In May 2022, Ipipiri Nature Conservancy Trust successfully raised enough funds to purchase the property from the Elliot family. Our vision is to protect and restore the area for future generations of Kiwis.

An Outstanding National Landscape

Designated as “an outstanding national landscape” by the Northern Regional Council, Te Akau is a place of significant ecological, archaeological, and cultural importance.

Te Akau spans 710 hectares. 510 hectares to the west are covered by centuries-old indigenous forest and native bush, while the remaining 200 hectares are grasslands. The forest is a haven and home to many of Aotearoa’s endangered native bird species.
