Planning a trail through Te Akau

With the acquisition of Te Akau (Elliot Bay) completed, one of the first priorities for the Ipipiri Nature Conservancy Trust is to develop a high-quality walk through the property. The longer-term goal is to work with Iwi and others to join this and other existing tracks to create a stunning multi-day walk throughout the wider area.

A potential route has been found that goes through the farm and to high points in the adjoining forest. The route gives access to breathtaking views of the Bay of Islands, Cavalli Islands to the north, and the Poor Knights Islands to the south. The route has been walked and the next step is to complete the design work and construct the trail.

Fortunately, much of the route follows old bulldozed farm tracks. The grade is steady but not too steep. Utilising old farm tracks reduces the amount of earthworks required, though metal will need to be spread on the track surface to reduce the risk of it becoming muddy in wet weather.

The trustees are committed to seeing the track developed. As well as being an attractive short walk for campers and day visitors, it forms the beginnings of a multi-day hike that will showcase the natural splendour of Te Akau and the Bay of Islands.
